The Mach 2 Story
In the early 1980's 2 farmers from southern Nebraska were tired of their center pivot tires going flat and having their pivots getting stuck. Mike & Clayton sat down to solve the problems.
They came up with what has turned out to be a very clever design. Much more aggressive treads that were bi-directional. That allowed them to run their pivots in either direction with out losing traction. Next, came how to keep it from going flat. That was a tougher problem. They went out and learned about polyethylene plastic and then rotational molding. The challenge was to make a very thick wall tire that did not need an inner tube or any compressed air at all.
The final problem to solve was how install them on rims? Because they are very tough plastic, there was no way to get them on a rim. Back to the drawing board. This is where they really knocked it out of the park.
They designed tire halves that bolt together. Along with making the whole idea come together, it gave Mach2 tires a lot of additional benefits.
By the early 1990's every one in the area was using Mach2 Tires on their pivots. The business was growing. They were having the tires molded at a smaller plastics company in Iowa. That molder knew he was going to struggle with keeping up so he referred Mike & Clayton to a larger molder in Wisconsin.
That relationship turned out better than expected. The new molder, Seljan Company in Lake Mills, Wis. along with having a lot of molding capacity also has an inhouse tooling division to make the actual molds. It was the perfect fit, or so Mike & Clayton thought. Seljan started making molds in more sizes and quantity to keep up with the sales. After about a year Mike & Clayton, who were still farming fulltime had reached a point where they couldn't keep up with the tire business. In January of 2010 Seljan bought the company. Mike continues to own 5% of the company and is always available to consult and help at trade shows. Clayton passed away after a short illness. His widow and family continue to be a 5% owner of the company.
Since 2010 Seljan has grown the business dramatically. Now offering 14 different pivot tire sizes in 3 distinctive tread styles. Mach 2 TIre Company has grown to be the leader in the non-pneumatic tire business. Along with using tires for replacement tires on existing pivots, Mach 2 is the OEM supplier to Reinke Manufacturing.
